Gabby from The Art Farm in the City brought some unusual visitors to Gillen Brewer: turtles! Students in the Dragons, Dimorphodons and Starlings learned about different types of turtles, their habitats, their sizes and conservation status. The students then got to handle a variety of turtles, including a red-eared slider and a Russian tortoise.

The Ladybugs and Puffins explored cars and ramps in science class. These lessons allowed students to experience a variety of physical properties like gravity, forces, collisions, and friction. What happens when we make a ramp higher, or give a car a push at the top? What will happen to a block at the foot of the ramp? Will a car roll farther on the desk or on a carpet? These questions and many others that occur naturally to children during these types of activities are great opportunities for problem solving and true constructivist learning.
