The Bunnies and the Dolphins raised butterflies in their classroom this spring. The students observed how a larva hatches from an egg, goes into a chrysalis, and eccludes as an adult insect: the butterfly. Today, the students released the butterflies on the roof!

To learn more about the chicks we hatched with the Grasshoppers and Penguins, the students used magnifying glasses and an observation guide to look for certain behaviors. When the student observes the behavior (e.g., eating, drinking, making a sound), they record this behavior on the guide in front of them with a pencil. This activity helps the students to focus their observations and also to switch tasks between observing and recording, an important executive functioning goal in the elementary science classroom!
The Great White Sharks and the Tigers are learning about the solar system through the use of online resources and nonfiction texts. So far, the students have enjoyed some new texts that were generously donated during the annual book fair. Many of these books present high-quality images and helpful diagrams that help our students think about what the universe is beyond our planet. We are also using NASA's fantastic Eyes on the Solar System. The screenshot below will give you an idea of how this software works. It is totally free and absolutely worth some screen time, so try it out at home!
