The Tigers, Great White Sharks and Cheetahs are combining measurement and graphing skills to study forces such as gravity and friction. In a test that mirrors New York State's Science Performance Test for fourth graders, the students roll toy cars down ramps and observe the ensuing collisions. We are expanding on this test in a variety of ways. First, by trying the test on a variety of surfaces, we can explore how different materials experience different amounts of friction. Similarly, we can change the ramp's height or length, try different cars, use different types of cups, or even apply our own force to the cups as they roll down the ramp to produce a greater effect. Key vocabulary words for this unit include force, gravity, collision and, eventually, inertia. Finally, for a fun treatment of forces and motion, check out the Bill Nye episode below:

After exploring the five senses, the Penguins and Grasshoppers are learning about their interior body parts. We are using a variety of tools, models and multimedia resources to help the students think about these parts and their functions.
